DESIGNING THE TERRACES AND ROOFTOP OF A DWELLING THAT IS PART OF THE CITY’S SKYLINE

It´s about a raised house, designed and constructed by La Casa por el Tejado. VERVEINE joined to design an outdoor project that would enhance its location on a central artery of Barcelona, with sustainability and urban responsibility criteria.

Our priority was to create a series of natural spaces and play areas for adults and children, including a barbecue area, outdoor dining, and a vegetable garden. A pool was also planned, but it was ultimately limited to a shower area due to ecological awareness.

One of the best things was the client’s enthusiasm about creating a garden on top of a building.

There was a barbecue with uses and forms that are not very versatile, instead of replacing it, we transformed and adapted it to the design. We also used the existing pavement, creating voids for the vegetation to break the monotony of the space.

During the furniture design phase, it was a pleasant surprise to discover our client’s passion for ping-pong: we tailored the table for dining and gatherings to the official measurements of this sport.

Together with the client, we made a conscious choice to prioritize native fauna, opting for plant species that support the recovery of bat populations, attract birds, and cultivate an insect-friendly ecosystem.

The vegetation was arranged into two layers. The upper layer integrates with the Platanus hispanica of l’Eixample and, while the lower, spreading layer features dynamic grasses such as Stipa tenuissima and Carissa macrocarpa, which are highly appealing to birds.
