ROOFTOP

FROM INDUSTRIAL ROOFTOP TO MEDITERRANEAN URBAN OASIS IN POBLENOU

In Barcelona’s Poblenou, a neighborhood where industrial heritage coexists with the creativity of the 22@ district, we transformed the rooftop of a former dairy into a Mediterranean urban oasis. Amid industrial warehouses, workshops, and new buildings, the project engages in a dialogue between the neighborhood’s history and its present.

The intervention turns a rigid, functional rooftop into a habitable garden, fresh and responsive to the Mediterranean climate. The urban geometry, exposed brick walls of the historic building, and the Poblenou skyline structure the design, while drought-tolerant vegetation adds texture, color, and seasonal movement. On the rooftop, Olea europaea trees organize the space, accompanied by slow-growing, sculptural, minimalist climbers that highlight the weathered patina of the walls.
On the lower level, the terrace garden incorporates a back office, an outdoor kitchen and social area, and shrub planting, offering privacy and comfort. The Platanus hispanica canopy provides shade in summer and allows sunlight in winter, following the natural seasonal cycle.

The result is a Mediterranean urban oasis: a place where history, vegetation, and city merge, creating a contemporary, habitable, and sensitive space that connects its inhabitants with the essence of Poblenou and with nature
